What is Gate crypto exchange

Formerly known as Gate.io, Gate (Gate.com) is a global cryptocurrency exchange designed to serve both casual investors and professional traders. Founded in 2013 and currently serving over 41 million users across 200+ countries, it is counted among the industry’s pioneering platforms.

Gate’s USP centres on three important factors that differentiate it from its peers. First, it supports 3,500+ cryptocurrencies, including some of the lesser-known assets. Second, it offers a full-featured ecosystem, enabling people to engage with crypto in several ways. Lastly, it maintains an independently verifiable proof of 100% reserves (PoR), ensuring financial security and transparency.

[Note: In 2015, when Gate operated as Bter, it suffered a security breach leading to a loss of 7,170 Bitcoins (BTC). All affected users were reimbursed.]

History of Gate

Gate’s origins date back to 2013 when it was launched in China as Bter by Dr Lin Han, a PhD in optoelectronics. It was one of the early exchanges in the country’s burgeoning crypto environment. However, strict regulatory restrictions pushed Bter out of China, rebranded as Gate.io and pivoted towards a broader international market.

By 2018-2020, Gate.io had set-up a base in the Cayman Islands, a favourable and common destination for many established crypto firms. In May 2025, Gate.io adopted a fresh logo and a new domain, Gate.com, to advance as the next-gen crypto trading platform.

Gate has steadily expanded its offerings over the years and currently lists 3,500+ crypto assets. Its tie-ups with leading entities like Oracle Red Bull Racing and Inter Milan football club have helped it gain global recognition.

Gate: Functions and Services

One of Gate’s key strengths is its broad range of crypto services that go well beyond simple buying and selling. Let’s look at some of them below:

  • Buy & sell: A straightforward way to get onboarded to crypto, this service allows users to buy a wide variety of crypto coins with fiat currency (regular money). You can pay through commonly known methods like Visa, MasterCard, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Revolut Pay, wire transfer, and Automatic Clearing House (ACH). Please note, the available payment options may vary depending on your location.
  • Spot trading: Trading in its most basic form, spot trades involve swapping crypto assets at their immediate exchange rate. You can also place ‘limit’ orders to execute trades at your desired price. On Gate, you can swap between thousands of assets.
  • Margin trading: In margin trading, you can deposit some initial capital and avail leverage (borrow funds) to amplify your trading positions. Please note, interest starts accruing from the moment you avail a loan.
  • Futures trading: Meant for advanced traders, futures trades let you speculate on crypto assets’ future price movements. You don’t need to hold the underlying assets and can use up to 125x leverage to increase your gains. But remember, losses are equally magnified, so tread cautiously.
  • Copy trading: This service lets you copy top traders’ and even successful bots’ strategies in the spot and futures markets.
  • Simple earn: Earn passive income at an annual percentage rate (APR) of up to 300% on your idle crypto funds. You can join or exit anytime.
  • Staking: Another passive income feature, staking involves locking crypto to secure blockchain networks and receiving staking rewards in return. APR changes dynamically based on the supported blockchain.
  • Crypto lending: This is a zero-fee service that lets you deposit your idle crypto assets as collateral to borrow other cryptocurrencies for investment or trading opportunities. There’s no need for an exchange transaction. For example, you can deposit your idle Ethereum (ETH) coins to borrow Tether (USDT), which can then be used for spot trading, futures trading or other investment opportunities. You can even withdraw the borrowed funds to external platforms.

Is Gate safe to use in 2025?

Gate places strong emphasis on security, regulatory compliance and transparent asset management. It employs multiple protection layers, including two-factor authentication (2FA), real-time threat monitoring, anti-phishing codes, offline storage for over 95% of user funds and mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) verification for full access.

The platform claims commitment to maintaining 100% reserves through a verifiable PoR system that allows anyone to audit holdings without revealing personal details. As of writing, its reserves stood at over $9 billion, at a total reserve ratio of 125%, meaning all user assets are over-collateralised and fully backed.

Gate also maintains a $500 million security asset fund (SAFU) to provide an additional safety net for its users’ assets.

With regards to regulatory compliance, Gate adopts a multi-jurisdictional licensing approach, holding formal licenses/authorisations in several regions, including:

  • Registration as Digital Currency Exchange Provider with Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC)
  • Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license from Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA)
  • Cyprus Investment Firm (CIF) license from Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC). Applicable across 27 EEA countries
  • Registration permission for a cryptocurrency exchange business operator from Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA)

It’s worth mentioning that Bter, Gate’s predecessor, was hit by a cold wallet hack in February 2015. The breach led to a theft of 7,170 BTC, valued at nearly $1.75 million at the time. The exchange took interest-free loans and made around 20,000 impacted users whole, over two years.
